GIS Contribution to Dwelling Level Energy and Condition Modelling

BRE provides dwelling level data services to local authorities and other organisations with an interest in the condition, energy use and impact on health of dwellings. The data is then used to develop strategies and target both areas and individual dwellings for campaigns and improvement measures. Robert Flynn will share with attendees the techniques used to develop GIS models, with examples of practical use of energy input and output data.

Enabling the Discovery of Lost Waterways

Despite more than 200 miles of canal having been restored since the Millennium, Britain is still home to hundreds of miles of abandoned waterways. To garner further public support and get people interested and engaged with the nation’s long history of canals, the Canal & River Trust team used ArcGIS Online to create an interactive story map to tell the story of the lost waterways. Attendees will learn how a powerful marketing/information tool can be built using out-of-the-box functionality, keeping costs down, as well as how the Trust is planning to use ArcGIS Online in the future.

Local Government: from GIS to Civic Platform and Information System

In this session Jamie Saunders will talk through Bradford Council’s journey with ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online since 2012. His presentation will address how GIS has helped to create both a civic platform and information system that meets citizens’ needs, while supporting local prosperity, wellbeing and resilience during a period of austerity and regeneration.

Mobile Crowd-Sourced Mapping in Developing Countries

In 2014 Alcis undertook a task to map and cluster every single compound across Afghanistan in order to understand where the population was. However there remains a need to develop an accessible community engagement tool that enables local people to participate, interact and inform the mapping process.

Alcis need to not only collect data on many different assets such as buildings, fields, roads and cars but provide a way in which as many people as possible can assist in the areas being surveyed. Alcis envisions the future of GIS data collection as a communal process between technical innovators and local people. The mapping of local communities, infrastructure and geographies is becoming an increasingly interactive process incorporating local knowledge and innovative technologies. The developing world's technical trend has prioritised mobile technology over more traditional laptops and PC's. As these markets develop, the GIS industry must innovate to provide useful, adaptive and responsible products to serve this new mobile community. ArcGIS Developer APIs have been central to the solution: from initial ideas to inception, through development, application and usage. The speed and flexibility in which a platform can be conceived, tested and implemented was instrumental in the decision to use this technology - without it, the ease of creation, data management and analysis would not have been possible. This session covers the development of our platform, demonstrating the issues encountered and the solutions discovered.

Visualising Spatio-Temporal Clusters of Crime

The presentation aims to convey the following two main points: 1. Unique insights regarding complex spatial phenomena such as crime and other events, can be obtained by combining detailed geometry of the street network and time of the event. 2. Complex spatial analyses can be built by combining off-the shelf functions of Service Area and OD Matrix Calculations available in the ArcObjects SDK with fast spatial-indexing and topological queries in Open Source libraries such as NetTopologySuite.

Enhancing Learning Outcomes for Geography Students using GIS-based Approaches to Instruction

Using ArcGIS Online to Support Parliamentary Business

Recognising that the majority of their data was geographic, this presentation will share how an ArcGIS -enabled approach, internally known as Data Centric Working was piloted, the initial business benefits that were realised, and how the Pilot has helped inform DGC’s plans for future internal business change.

Sharing your work is an important part of ArcGIS Pro. You can share everything from entire projects to maps, layers, and other components of your work. You can share maps from your project as web maps. In this taster session you will look around the new and exciting user interface, explore migrating data and share that data to a wider audience.

The JavaScript API and ArcGIS

There are many technologies which help you access and share your GIS content and functionality. Exposing maps and analytical tools over the internet is becoming an important way of disseminating geographic information.

In this session you will see how the ArcGIS JavaScript API gives you the ability to provide your end users with web applications to visualise geographic features and tools to unlock additional information from the maps.

You will learn how to use the samples on the developer website and get a general overview of the basic capabilities of the JavaScript API. Because the JavaScript API is a developer toolkit, some previous programming/scripting experience will help you to get the best out of this event.

Working with ModelBuilder

Models are workflows that string together sequences of geoprocessing tools, feeding the output of one tool into another tool as input. ModelBuilder can also be thought of as a visual programming language for building workflows.

While ModelBuilder is very useful for constructing and executing simple workflows, it also provides advanced methods for extending ArcGIS functionality by allowing you to create and share your models as tools or scripts. Models are re-usable so are useful for processes that you run regularly or for processes that require you to test scenarios by changing inputs and other parameters.

This session will show you how to create a simple model and set parameters that can be input when you run the model.

You will also see how a model can be embedded within another model as a tool.
